Many of us know Beatrix Potter as a celebrated children’s book illustrator, author and creator of the “Tale of Peter Rabbit” little books. Born in 1866, Beatrix was brought up in a wealthy Victorian family connected to London’s art world. Most of her training was informal, practicing sketching and painting, copying, drawing plants, animals and country scenes. She was fortunate to be mentored by the Victorian painter John Everett Millais, a family friend. Her mediums were watercolor, pen and ink, sepia ink and pencil. She is known for her paintings and drawings of landscapes, interiors, plants and animals.
Betsy Bray, a Chatham resident, has been a member of the Beatrix Potter Society for 37 years. She served as the first overseas Trustee of the Society and has given presentations all over the world, including lectures on transatlantic voyages of the Queen Mary 2.
